The President of Suriname, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, will pay a visit to Brasília on May 28 and 29, when she will hold a working meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The presidential meeting, on May 28, will be an opportunity to examine the main topics on the broad bilateral agenda, including energy, infrastructure, trade and investment, the environment, the fight against transnational crimes, defense, consular assistance, humanitarian cooperation, and social policies.
The leaders are also expected to discuss regional and international issues, such as the activities of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), the Brasília Consensus, CELAC and the OAS, greater integration between South America and the Caribbean, and the strengthening of multilateralism and the United Nations.
The Presidents are also expected to discuss progress in the dialogue aimed at expanding the reach of Partial Scope Economic Complementation Agreement No. 41 (AAP-41), initiated in 2025. The recent discovery of hydrocarbons in Suriname, whose exploitation is expected to begin in the coming years, opens prospects for increased road connectivity and flows, and diversification of exports and imports. Trade between the two countries has grown in recent years and has increased by approximately 25% since the beginning of 2023.
