Romania and Montenegro, the same approach on the Western Balkans' security and stability

On Tuesday, September 30th, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, had a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro, Filip Ivanović, as part of the Warsaw Security Forum.

The talks reconfirmed Romania's constant support for Montenegro's European path, the declared political objective of the Government of Montenegro being the full accession to the European Union by 2030, an ambition that Romania actively supports.

The two officials emphasized that the Western Balkans represents a region of strategic importance for both Romania and the EU, the stability and resilience of this space being directly linked to European security. Romania reaffirmed its support for the integration of the states in the region into the Union, reflected also through its significant operational contributions to regional commitments to NATO and the EU.

Romania congratulated Montenegro for its constructive role in maintaining regional stability and for its active participation in the EU missions and operations, including through the positive vote of the Parliament in June 2025 on Montenegro's future involvement in the EUMAM Ukraine.

Minister Moșteanu also emphasized the support offered by our country and the EU to strengthen Montenegro's resilience and defence capacity, through financial instruments such as the European Peace Facility (EPF).

The Warsaw meeting reconfirmed the political will of Romania and Montenegro to closely cooperate to promote peace, security and stability in the Western Balkans region, and represented an opportunity to reaffirm support for Montenegro's accession process to the European Union.
