This note sets out a method for estimating the number of people prevented from claiming asylum following introduction of visit visa requirements for nationals of Jordan, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Botswana up to December 2025.
This finds that visit visa requirements on nationals of these countries may have prevented between 4,541 and 6,174 people from claiming asylum up to December 2025. This in turn has saved the Home Office an estimated £278 million to £377 million in hotel accommodation costs for destitute asylum seekers.
