New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez today announced that major construction is complete on a $2.5 million project to replace the bridge that carries State Route 19 over the Black Creek Overflow in the Town of Bergen, Genesee County. With an expected service life of 75 years, the new structure features a seamless surface and widened shoulders to provide smoother travel and enhanced safety for motorists, agribusiness traffic, cyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, the bridge was raised three feet to accommodate a secondary channel that holds excess water when Black Creek exceeds its capacity, enhancing the resiliency of the structure.
"The replacement of this century-old bridge will bring the structure up to modern standards, supporting the seamless movement of people and agricultural products, while enhancing public safety travel conditions for the residents, students, visitors and commercial users who regularly travel this route," Commissioner Dominguez said. "This new bridge demonstrates Governor Hochul's staunch commitment to public safety and modernizing New York's transportation network to meet the evolving needs of growing communities throughout the Genesee Valley and across the Empire State."
The project replaced a 35-foot-long, two-span, concrete slab bridge that was built in 1927 with a modern, 50-foot, integral abutment bridge. Integral abutment bridges lack the metal expansion joints typically found at the ends of conventional bridges, which can create a "bump" for drivers. In addition to creating a more pleasant travel experience, the lack of joints, combined with the structure's corrosion-resistant, galvanized-steel girders, is expected to reduce future closures for unscheduled maintenance.
While the original structure had two eleven-foot travel lanes with five-foot shoulders, the replacement structure features nine-foot shoulders to better accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.
State Route 19 runs from the shore of Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania state line, largely as a two-lane rural road. Near the Town of Bergen, it connects motorists to Interstate 490 and State Route 5, SUNY Brockport, multiple Rochester suburbs, several historic villages and a wildlife refuge. The bridge carries State Route 19 across Black Creek, a 46-mile tributary of the Genesee River, in the historic Town of Bergen, which was originally settled in the early 1800s.
Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists should note that on-site construction activities will continue, and periodic lane closures controlled by flagging personnel will occur through November.
