City of Milton Announces Winter Storm Preparations, Road Closures, and Cold Weather Shelter

MILTON, Fla. - The City of Milton is preparing for a major winter storm expected to hit the area on Tuesday, January 21, with a 100% chance of snow. Snow accumulation is expected to exceed 3 inches in some areas, with a 70% chance of snowfall accumulating that much or more. The chance for ice is low, but dangerous road conditions are still anticipated.

Public Safety and Road Closures

The City of Milton, in coordination with Santa Rosa County and the State of Florida, is actively preparing for the storm. To ensure public safety, the bridges at Broad Street and Conecuh Street will be closed on Tuesday. Traffic will be diverted to Stewart Street, which offers larger roads and signalized intersections. The state will be clearing and salting this roadway to facilitate safer travel.

The City and County will be sanding the bridges immediately before the storm begins tomorrow. In addition, the City is coordinating with the state for roadways at Hwy 90 at the Blackwater River and Pond Creek, Stewart & Dogwood Streets, and Park Ave.

Cold Weather Shelter Activation

Due to the Ferriss Hill Cold Shelter reaching full capacity, the Red Cross is on standby to activate an emergency shelter at the Clyde L. Gracey Community Center as part of winter storm preparations. The shelter will be available for both people and pets. The City will provide an official announcement if and when the shelter opens. The shelter, if opened, will be under the direction of the American Red Cross and not the City of Milton

Santa Rosa County and School Closures

Santa Rosa County offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 22. A decision regarding the City of Milton's operations will be made tomorrow based on weather conditions and guidance from the County, as well as the State of Florida. According to County Administrator's recommendations, the main concern is that there will be no time above freezing to melt snow or ice prior to Thursday.

Santa Rosa and Escambia County schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Public Safety Advisory

Now is the time to prepare. With the severity of the storm, the City of Milton strongly advises residents to stay home and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. If you must travel, please use major streets. Ensure that you have adequate supplies, including food, water, medications, and warm clothing.

The City of Milton is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents during this winter weather event. For updates and information, contact the Public Information Officer at (850) 983-5400, ext. 1046, or email [email protected].
