(COLUMBIA, MO)- Columbia Regional Airport (COU) saw a historic year marked by record passenger numbers, expanded airline service and major infrastructure enhancements. In 2025, more Mid-Missouri travelers than ever before chose to fly local, and COU delivered with more destinations, more seats and more convenience.
The airport welcomed a record-breaking 242,167 passengers in 2025, representing a 17 percent increase compared to the previous year.
"2025 was a defining year for Columbia Regional Airport," said Michael Parks, manager of Columbia Regional Airport. "The community's support has fueled this growth, and we're proud to offer more choices, stronger connectivity and an even better travel experience for Mid-Missouri to destinations around the world."
To meet growing demand, COU added five new nonstop routes to Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Orlando, Charlotte, Chicago and Denver, introducing more than 164,000 new seats to the market. The return of United Airlines and the addition of Allegiant Air further expanded the airport's route network and strengthened connectivity for regional travelers. This remarkable growth will include nearly 300,000 total seats scheduled to depart from COU in 2026.
Expanded air service strengthens connectivity
Expanded air service at COU continues to support regional economic development, strengthen connectivity for employers and educational institutions, and provide Missouri residents with more convenient access to destinations across the country and around the world.
In 2025, COU welcomed the return of United Airlines with daily nonstop service to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Denver International Airport (DEN). These routes provide travelers with seamless, one-stop connections to hundreds of global destinations while offering greater flexibility for both business and leisure travel.
COU also expanded leisure travel options through Allegiant Air, introducing new nonstop service to two of Florida's most popular vacation destinations: Orlando and Destin-Fort Walton Beach. These routes offer affordable, convenient travel options for families, students and vacationers seeking low-cost access to popular leisure markets.
Building on this momentum, COU recently announced new daily nonstop service to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) on American Airlines, scheduled to begin June 4, 2026. As American Airlines' second-largest hub, CLT connects travelers to more than 180 destinations worldwide with just one connection. The new route complements American Airlines' existing nonstop service from COU to Chicago and Dallas Fort Worth.
American Airlines also increased overall seat capacity at COU by an average of 26 percent during peak travel seasons. This expansion includes a 62 percent increase in available seats to Chicago O'Hare, providing travelers with greater scheduling flexibility when connecting through one of the nation's busiest aviation hubs.
Improvements enhance traveler experience
As passenger numbers climbed, COU continued investing in improvements designed to make flying local even easier. To support increased passenger activity, COU is making major upgrades to its parking infrastructure. The airport has completed the first phase of a comprehensive parking lot construction project that converts existing gravel and grass areas into fully paved parking spaces. These new paved parking spaces are designed to improve accessibility, safety and reliability for travelers, while remaining available at no cost. The next phase of parking enhancement is scheduled for completion before the summer travel season.
In addition to improved parking options at COU, the airport will feature new food options for travelers beginning this summer. This will allow passengers hot food options on both the public and secure sides of the terminal facility. This will enhance the passenger experience for everyone at COU.
