Preparing for success: Career fair prep at Aurora University

In preparation for the upcoming Career and Internship Fair on October 8, Aurora University students had the opportunity to participate in Career Fair Prep Sessions designed to build confidence and sharpen their networking skills. A panel of employers from Alarm Detection Systems, City of Aurora, DHJJ, Enterprise Mobility, Hesed House, Illinois Tollway, and ILoca Services, Inc., shared practical insights and encouragement - especially for students stepping into a career fair for the very first time.

Here are the top takeaways to help you prepare and make a lasting impression before, during, and after the Career and Internship Fair:

Before the Fair: Get Ready

Preparation is the foundation of a successful career fair experience. Employers encouraged students to:

  • Research attending companies: Review the list of employers in advance, read job descriptions, and note what skills or experiences they value. Don't limit yourself only to "marketing companies" or "finance companies" - many organizations have roles across multiple departments.
  • Make your target list: Identify your "dream" employers as well as others you'd like to explore. Having a plan will help you stay focused.
  • Polish your resume: Highlight your education and experiences - student organizations, athletics, volunteer work, and class projects all count. Show your impact by using strong action verbs and results-driven bullet points. Avoid pitfalls like spelling errors, inconsistent formatting, missing contact information, or informal language. Career Services staff can review resumes, and students can also use VMock, AU's 24/7 online resume review tool.
  • Plan your look: First impressions matter, and business professional attire is ideal. AU's Spartan Attic is available and stocked with free professional clothing if you need it.
  • Manage the nerves: Employers understand you may feel anxious - it's normal. Remind yourself that they're coming to campus specifically to meet students like you!

During the Fair: Make Connections

On October 8, the Career and Internship Fair will run from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Thornton Gymnasium in Alumni Hall. Students can stop in at any time, but be sure to allow enough time for meaningful conversations. While you're there:

  • Introduce yourself confidently: Offer a firm handshake, make eye contact, smile, and share your name, year, major, and what you're seeking (internship, full-time, or exploring).
  • Be authentic: Employers appreciate genuine conversation. Recruiters are people, too, so it's okay to relax, smile, and let your personality show.
  • Ask questions: Come prepared with questions. If you see an employer wearing an AU alumni pin, ask about their experience at AU - it's a great icebreaker.
  • Bring materials: Carry several copies of your resume in a folder or padfolio to share with employers, collect their business cards, and take notes.
  • Use support: If you need encouragement, stop by the Career Services Hype Corner in UBH for advice, practice, or a confidence boost.

After the Fair: Follow Up

The conversation doesn't end when you leave the fair. Following up is an essential step:

  • Send thank-you emails within 48 hours: Reference something you discussed to show attentiveness and attach your resume if appropriate.
  • Connect on LinkedIn: When you do, include a short note like, "It was great meeting you at the AU Career Fair."
  • Be mindful of timelines: Some positions may be open immediately, while others have later deadlines. Acknowledge this in your follow-up message.
  • Stay proactive: Even if an opportunity isn't available right now, employers often remember students who made a strong impression for future openings.

The Career and Internship Fair is a two-way street. Employers are looking for talented AU students, and you're looking for the right opportunities. Whether you're targeting internships or exploring your options, show up prepared, be yourself, and take advantage of the resources available to you.
