Measures to ensure the safety and protection of EU citizens amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East

2.3.2026

Priority question for written answer P-000845/2026/rev.1
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 144
Victor Negrescu (S&D)

Amid the recent escalation of military tensions in the Middle East and the security threats posed by Iran, which have led to closures of airspace and the considerable disruption of civil airline traffic, there are major concerns over the safety of EU citizens in the region, including a significant number of Romanian citizens, among them children, and over regional security risks liable to affect EU Member States and internal security. I would therefore request to clarify and take clear action on the following matters:

  • 1.What concrete mechanisms have been triggered at EU level to coordinate the repatriation of EU citizens from the area affected, in particular through the European External Action Service and the EU Civil Protection Mechanism?
  • 2.What risk assessments have been conducted at EU level on the potential consequences of the conflict for the EU's internal security (including terrorist risks, hybrid attacks and pressure on external borders) and what preventive measures have already been implemented to strengthen the protection of citizens and of the Schengen area?
  • 3.What diplomatic and security measures is the EU considering to help manage the situation in this region and safeguard the interests and stability of Member States, including through cooperation with NATO, the United States, Israel and the United Kingdom, its regional partners and multilateral organisations?
