ILLINOIS - State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) rose on the House floor today to honor the life of Katie Abraham, a 20-year-old woman whose life was tragically cut short by a drunk driver in the country illegally.
"Katie Abraham should be alive today. She is not. And that truth must move us - not tomorrow, not someday - but now," Halbrook said in his floor speech.
Marking the anniversary of her death, Halbrook highlighted Katie's life and the preventable nature of the tragedy that took her from her family. He praised her father, Joe Abraham, for his courage in advocating for change and emphasized the human cost of failed immigration and public safety policies.
"Katie's death was not an accident of fate. It was the predictable result of systems that failed - systems that chose ideology over accountability, and politics over public safety," Halbrook stated.
Halbrook urged lawmakers to pursue compassionate but accountable policies that protect all families - citizens and immigrants alike.
