Foreign Ministry Keeps Middle East Embassies on Alert

Yesterday, Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente held an additional virtual meeting with the heads of Mexico's embassies in the Middle East to follow up on security conditions and the protection of Mexican nationals living in or traveling through the region.

To date, 1,240 Mexican citizens have been evacuated along secure routes, taking advantage of the gradual reopening of airspace. Most of the tourists who requested assistance and were located in the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Bahrain, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iran, and Qatar have now been successfully evacuated.

Strengthening security measures remains the top priority, with a continued focus on safeguarding the physical safety of Mexican nationals, diplomatic staff, and their families.

Secretary De la Fuente commended the embassy heads for the professional and dedicated work carried out by Mexico's diplomatic personnel in the region, urging them to redouble their efforts. He further instructed them to maintain close contact with local authorities, and in particular with the foreign ministries of each country.

Participating in the meeting were Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs María Teresa Mercado; Chief of Staff Roberto de León; Director General for Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East Aníbal Gómez; Director General of Consular Protection Vanessa Calva; and Director General of Communication Daniela Zapata.

Also present were Mexico's ambassadors and chargés d'affaires in the region: Guillermo Puente Ordorica (Iran), Mauricio Escanero Figueroa (Israel), Luis Alfonso de Alba Góngora (United Arab Emirates), Victoria Romero (Azerbaijan), Eduardo Peña Haller (Kuwait), Guillermo Ordorica Robles (Qatar), Jacob Prado González (Jordan), Francisco Romero Bock (Lebanon), and Pedro Blanco Pérez, Head of the Representative Office in Palestine, along with chargés d'affaires Guillermo Gutiérrez Nieto (Saudi Arabia) and Héctor Ortega Nieto (Egypt).
