$163 Million SAPA Expansion Accelerates Defense Manufacturing Growth in Macomb County

The SAPA Transmission expansion in Shelby Township stands as one of the region's most transformative commercial real estate developments of 2026. This project represents a major milestone in Macomb County's defense manufacturing growth and exemplifies strategic collaboration between Macomb County Planning and Economic Development (MCPED), the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Shelby Township, Michigan Works, Macomb Community College, and private-sector developers.

SAPA Transmission, a Spain-based global leader in combat vehicle mobility systems, is investing approximately $163 million to construct a new 200,000 sq. ft. advanced manufacturing facility located at 50770 Birch Drive Shelby Township MI 48315. This state-of-the-art facility will house expanded machining operations, doubling the company's machine cells from 3 to 6, and enabling in-house production of gears, planetary carriers, and bevel gears. The new development significantly enhances SAPA's capability as the premier combat vehicle transmission supplier for U.S. and NATO military fleets, supporting programs including the Abrams Main Battle Tank, the GDLS/American Rheinmetall XM30, and other future Army mobility platforms.

Beyond its defense significance, the project's commercial real estate impact is substantial. SAPA's expansion brings more than 300 new jobs to Shelby Township, adding to the 200 positions created during earlier phases of development. Their total investment in Macomb County now approaches $200 million, and this newest facility further establishes the Cherry Creek Industrial Park as a hub for advanced manufacturing and defense innovation in Southeast Michigan.

The deal reflects exceptional partnership and coordination. Macomb County Planning and Economic Development (MCPED), the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Shelby Township, Michigan Works, Macomb Community College, and private-sector developers collaborated to secure a competitive incentive package, address site planning and infrastructure needs, and navigate Brownfield redevelopment opportunities. MCPED played an instrumental role in structuring the project, engaging talent partners, facilitating township support, and ensuring all parties worked in alignment to advance SAPA's growth.

What began as a small exploratory presence in 2016, supported by MCPED's provision of free space at Velocity and strategic introductions to critical partners-has now evolved into one of the most substantial manufacturing investments in Macomb County's recent history.
