By about 5:30 a.m., Hannah Schaaf, a Chevron operations section head, is arriving at Southern California's El Segundo Refinery. At 6:00, she joins the incoming day crew to review what happened overnight and what comes next, from equipment needs to maintenance work and safety efforts.
She's doing this work at the refinery that gave the city of El Segundo its name. In 1911, before El Segundo incorporated as a city, Standard Oil Co. of California (Socal) named its second California refinery El Segundo, Spanish for "the second." A community grew around the facility and took the name, too.
