U.S. Department of State Celebrates New U.S. Embassy Tegucigalpa

The U.S. Department of State Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) celebrated the new U.S. Embassy Compound in Tegucigalpa with a ribbon-cutting, illustrating continued investment in the U.S.-Honduras relationship. U.S. Ambassador to Honduras Laura Dogu, Honduras Presidential Designate Renato Florentino, and OBO Director Patricia Lacina provided remarks and joined together to cut the ceremonial ribbon.

The new embassy facility will serve as a hub for the continued relationship between the U.S. and Honduran people-affording visitors and embassy staff alike with a functional space to provide consular services, discuss solutions to migration flows, and support business opportunities.

Designed by SHoP Architects with the support of local firm Jorge Caballero Arquitectos and constructed by B.L. Harbert International, the project created over 1,000 jobs for Hondurans and contributed over $42 million to the local economy. The new embassy demonstrates building performance optimization, as evidenced by the pending US Green Building Council's certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ®) due to sustainable strategies including solar panels power generation, the recycling of rainwater for irrigation, and the use of local materials. Art installations that include Honduran artist Adán Vallecillo and a meticulously preserved century-old Guanacaste tree demonstrate a commitment to cross-cultural collaboration and a respect for the local environment.

OBO provides the most effective facilities for United States diplomacy abroad. Since the start of the Department's Capital Security Construction Program in 1999, OBO has completed 183 new diplomatic facilities and has 49 active projects in design or construction worldwide.
