WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Chris Coons (D-DE) met with Finnish President Alexander Stubb during his visit to Washington, D.C. this week.
Senator Shaheen and President Stubb reaffirmed the deep ties and strong alliance that exist between the United States and Finland. Senator Shaheen thanked Finland for its important contributions to the NATO Alliance particularly in their leadership on the Eastern flank. Senator Shaheen discussed Russia's ongoing efforts to undermine European and Allied security and the increased security threat posed by Russia's shadow fleet. Senator Shaheen noted the importance of applying additional pressure on Putin and welcomed the European Union's progress on its 19th sanctions package. Senator Shaheen also highlighted a number of legislative initiatives under consideration in Congress to force Putin to the negotiating table and secure a lasting peace in Ukraine. Finally, Senator Shaheen conveyed gratitude for Finland's partnership in icebreaker ship technology to advance our shared security interests in the Arctic.
Senator Shaheen recently introduced bipartisan legislation to sanction Russia's energy sector and target their shadow fleet.
