Flu shot season underway at OU

The Graham Health Center is again leading the campus effort in providing influenza vaccines to the Oakland University community in hopes for a healthier, happier upcoming flu season.

"A flu shot is the best preventative measure to avoid the flu, or to lessen its impact, and protect others during this year's flu season," says Ann Rayford, nurse practitioner and Director of the Graham Health Center. "It has been great to have the support of President Pescovitz, Provost Thompson and Grizz, and to be able to partner with Marcus, Nia and Student Congress to help bring flu shot awareness to our student body. And, we always appreciate the support of Alana's Foundation to help make the flu shot available to everyone on campus."

Graham Health Center has already administered more than 750 flu vaccines this semester at various pop-up clinics around campus and during appointments at Graham Health Center.

Rayford says there will be several pop-up flu vaccine clinics held on campus during the semester and that the Graham Health Center will also accept walk-in appointments for flu shots Mondays-Fridays between 8 a.m. and Noon and again from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

"Even if you choose not to get a flu vaccine on campus, we encourage everyone to consider utilizing vaccine offerings at their doctor's office, drug stores or other clinics," Rayford added.

Each year, many young adults in Michigan will get sick, miss class and some even die from the flu. Unfortunately, less than 20 percent of college-age residents between the ages of 18-24 get vaccinated in the state of Michigan. The good news is that there continues to be an upward trend of increased vaccination rates in the state among this age group.

Members of the campus community can self-schedule flu vaccine appointments via the secure patient portal or walk-in during the hours listed above. You can also contact the Graham Health Center to ask further questions or to schedule an appointment by calling (248) 370-2341.

In general, health insurance will be billed for the influenza vaccine. Meanwhile, if Graham Health Center is not in-network with some insurance plans, or if students are uninsured, they may be eligible for a free vaccine thanks to OU's 2025-2026 partnership with the Alana's Foundation.
