HONOLULU - Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is updating on the full closure of Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay due to two large boulders falling from the slope above the highway around 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026. Slope assessments, which involve the possibility of additional rock fall, have begun. For the safety of all road users, no one will be allowed on the highway during the work. HDOT estimates that the full closure will remain in place throughout the night.

The work involves:

  • Placement of steel plates on the highway to protect the waterline from rock impacts;
  • Removal of any additional loose material (i.e., rock scaling) from the slopes above the highway;
  • Breaking up the large boulders for removal;
  • Assessment of the characteristics of loosened boulders and inspection of the slope.

Vehicles are being turned around on the Kahuku side of the closure at Three Tables and on the Haleʻiwa side of the closure at 'Iliohu Way.

Additional updates will be provided as the work progresses.
