SIIA Urges Kansas Lawmakers to Reconsider SB 350’s Approach to School Technology

The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) submitted a letter to Kansas lawmakers outlining serious concerns with SB 350, the proposed Age Appropriate School Device Act. While supporting student well-being and literacy, SIIA warns that the bill takes a one-size-fits-all approach to "screen time" that fails to distinguish between recreational use and educator-guided digital learning.

Drawing on national research and educator data, the letter explains how evidence-based educational technology supports student achievement, helps close learning gaps, and reduces administrative burdens on teachers. SIIA argues that SB 350 would impose costly unfunded mandates on schools, limit local flexibility, and undermine students' digital readiness for the modern workforce. The association urges lawmakers to pursue policies that ensure technology remains a bridge to learning rather than a barrier.
