Heritage Day 2026

Heritage Day 2026

On Wednesday, October 7, UIW celebrated Heritage Day, an annual gathering that honors the institution's Mission and the years of service dedicated by its faculty, staff and administrators. The ceremony was held in the Diane Bennack Concert Hall, where attendees gathered to give thanks for the enduring legacy of the founding Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) and to recommit themselves to the University's Mission, values and spirit of service. The celebration included opportunities for reflection, fellowship and recognition, highlighting the individuals whose commitment advances UIW's Catholic identity and ministry of education. Through prayer, gratitude and community, Heritage Day served as a meaningful reminder of the University's founding purpose and its continued impact on students and society.

The University recognized and awarded all full-time employees who celebrated five years of incremental service. This year, 145 employees were recognized, including six 25-year anniversaries and one 35-year anniversary.

35 Years of Service

John Newman

A graduate of Trinity University with a Bachelor of Science degree, he brought to UIW a distinguished background in both military service and collegiate athletics. He served our nation from 1960 to 1964, completing Paratrooper School, Ranger School and Nuclear Weapons School before serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in Europe and later volunteering for combat duty in Vietnam with a Ranger Battalion. For his military service, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Throughout an accomplished coaching career spanning Trinity University, the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University and UIW, he has impacted countless student-athletes and helped build championship programs. His teams have captured national championships at Trinity, Tennessee and four national titles here at UIW. His exceptional contributions to athletics have earned him numerous honors, including induction into the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame, the Trinity University Hall of Fame as both a player and coach, the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame and recognition as NCAA Regional Coach of the Year.

During his 35 years at UIW, he has served as Head Coach for Men's and Women's Tennis, Director of Tennis and currently as the Founding Director of Tennis Development. Beyond his professional achievements, he is most proud of his family: his wife of 25 years, Beverly; his five daughters; two stepdaughters; 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Reflecting on his time at UIW, he shared: "I have loved every minute of my life at such a friendly and Godly University. My prayer is that God continues to bless UIW and everyone who sets foot on this special place."

When reflecting on his years at UIW, Ambrose says, "The most rewarding aspect of his work has been the people. He is especially grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside students, faculty, staff, administrators and trustees, and considers it a particular privilege to see former students return to the University as colleagues and leaders." He describes himself as profoundly thankful and blessed to be part of the UIW community and Mission.

Michael Clayton

For 25 years, Michael has helped shape and strengthen UIW's Graphic Design program through his dedication to teaching, leadership and student success. He has served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Program Coordinator for Computer Graphic Arts and Graphic Design, Department Chair, and today serves as a Full Professor of Graphic Design.

When asked what has been most rewarding about his work at UIW, Michael's answer is simple and powerful: "the success of his students." He shares that his students are his "why," and their achievements continue to inspire and motivate his work each day.

Earl Harmsen

Over the course of 25 years, Earl has made a lasting impact on the H-E-B School of Business and Administration through his commitment to student development and academic excellence. His service has included roles as Business Management Coordinator, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Director, Business Club Faculty Advisor, Delta Mu Delta Faculty Advisor and H-E-B School of Business and Administration Admissions Liaison.

Michael Moon, PhD

Michael Moon has served as a professor at the University of the Incarnate Word in the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions. He has also continues to provide leadership across the University as President of the Faculty Senate since 2025.

Moon shares that the most rewarding aspect of his work has been collaborating with dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to educating and mentoring others, while also working with curious and engaged students who are eager to learn. He considers himself blessed to be part of a community united by a shared commitment to making the world a better place.

Nursen Zanca, PhD

Nursen Zanca serves as a professor of Economics at the University of the Incarnate Word, educating and inspiring generations of students while advancing the University's Mission.

When asked what has made her time at UIW most rewarding, Zanca points to three things that have defined her experience: "the UIW Mission, the enduring influence of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, and the University's remarkable students. Together, they have made her 25 years of service both meaningful and fulfilling."

In addition, Neeta Singh, PhD was recognized for her 25 years of service.

The ceremony concluded with words from UIW President Thomas M. Evans, PhD, drawing inspiration from Pope Leo's Apostolic Letter stating, "Christian education is a collective endeavor. No one educates alone. The educational community is a 'we', where teachers, students, families, administrative, service staff, pastors and civil society converge to generate life. You can hear that same 'we' echoed directly in the words of our honorees today."
