Milk Could Boost America's Worsening Bone Health

According to Matthew T. Drake, MD, PhD, Chief of the Endocrinology and Metabolic Bone Disease Services at HSS, calcium intake has declined over the years. In a piece with Real Clear Science, Dr. Drake discusses the recent uptick in milk consumption & the importance of bone health.

Dairy milk is making a comeback -- and not a moment too soon for America's bone health.

Dr. Drake explained that calcium intake has declined over the years, as bone-weakening lifestyle factors have surged. Americans are spending more time indoors, sitting at desks, getting less vitamin D, and doing fewer weight-bearing activities. All of this contributes to an overlooked but growing crisis: our bones are becoming weaker, at an earlier age, and in greater numbers than most people realize.
