Rosen Demands Answers from Nexstar Following Trump Administration Censorship of Jimmy Kimmel, Calls for Senate Hearings

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, is taking action to get more information related to the Trump Administration's censorship of Jimmy Kimmel and demanding Congressional oversight. In a letter, Senator Rosen called on Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-TX) to hold immediate hearings with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr about his actions to pressure Nexstar and ABC to censor Jimmy Kimmel in violation of the First Amendment. In a letter to Nexstar, Senator Rosen demanded answers about the company's decision to suspend Kimmel's show from the airwaves under FCC pressure and whether it has any relation to its pending merger with Tegna, which is currently under review by the FCC.

"The government censoring speech it disagrees with is what happens in dictatorships, not democracies. This isn't about whether someone likes Jimmy Kimmel's jokes or not; it is about the fact that every American has the right to speak without government interference," said Senator Rosen. "The actions by the Trump Administration in this case are deeply disturbing and threaten Americans' free speech rights. We deserve transparency, which is why I'm calling for immediate Senate hearings as well as answers from Nexstar about this misguided decision."
