Storage of foodstuffs in the EU and their accessibility in an emergency

Storage of foodstuffs in the EU and their accessibility in an emergency

9.10.2025

Question for written answer E-003978/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Adrian-George Axinia (ECR)

Ensuring the resilience of the Union's food supply is essential for public security and for the smooth functioning of the internal market. Questions have been raised, in this connection, as to how food reserves are being managed at EU level. Member States may maintain strategic stocks, but limited information is available on the level of coordination and the distribution and accessibility of these reserves throughout Europe. Furthermore, the Commission is currently discussing a proposal for a stockpiling strategy, to be forwarded to the European Parliament also, which makes the need for transparency in this area all the more urgent.

Questions to the Commission:

  • 1.Does the Commission have, or does it have access to, an overview or chart of food storage facilities in the EU?
  • 2.Are there EU-wide standards which ensure that food warehouses are strategically located and easily accessible in the event of an emergency (e.g. pandemics, natural disasters, armed conflicts) and what steps is the Commission taking to coordinate, with the Member States, the transparency, interoperability and rapid mobilisation of food reserves in crisis situations?
  • 3.How will the future EU stockpiling strategy address the monitoring and management of food stocks so as to enhance collective food security?
