Lismore’s REDInc opens new flood-resilient hub to secure vital disability services

The NSW Government has supported this project with $330,000 through the Towns and Villages Resilient Business Activation Program. Combined with REDinc's own investment of $99,000, this hub stands as a monument to the resilience and determination of the Lismore community.

New flood-resilient features include water-resistant gyprock wall panels, concrete flooring that can be easily washed down, and aluminium framing and edging to reduce damage and recovery time.

Flood risk was the key consideration in decisions about fixtures and fittings. The kitchen has also been designed so that all equipment can be wheeled out if necessary.

The renovations were designed to ensure that if flooding occurs again, the process of returning to the building will be significantly quicker than after the 2022 flood.

The opening of the new hub will enable REDinc to continue to deliver a wide range of practical, person-centred supports for people with disabilities.

These supports, which are designed to strengthen independence and participation in everyday life, include driver mentoring and training, home budgeting and money management, employment pathways and workplace skills, creative and social programs, daily living skills development, and community participation supports.

REDinc was one of 15 small-to-medium sized businesses, and three local councils, in the Northern Rivers which received grants worth more than $9.2 million, under the Towns and Villages Resilient Business Activation Program.

Minister for Disability Inclusion Kate Washington said:

"Locals with disability deserve to be able to easily access the services they rely on."

"That's why the Minns Labor Government has helped REDinc return to the heart of Lismore, so they can keep delivering life-changing services now and into the future."

Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin said:

"It is incredibly heartening to see REDinc back in the heart of Lismore, stronger and more prepared than ever before. This new hub is about more than just a renovation; it's about ensuring that people with disabilities in our community have a permanent, reliable space to grow, learn, and connect.

"By investing in flood-resilient features like moveable kitchens and water-resistant materials, we aren't just rebuilding-we are future-proofing. This means that if the waters do return, these vital services will be able to reopen faster.

"The NSW Government is proud to support REDinc as they continue their life-changing work in a space that is built to last."

REDinc CEO Marie Gale said:

"The opening reflects both resilience and community determination. Families told us clearly that these services matter, and that having them available locally makes a real difference to daily life. This space exists because the community spoke up."

"Having a flood-resilient space in Lismore is critical. The people we support rely on consistent, local services. This space ensures that people with disability, along with their families and carers, can continue to access essential supports in their own community, even as we plan for future events."

"The resilient features will support REDinc to remain locally based and operational in a region that has experienced repeated flooding and disruption.

"REDinc is a much loved and respected organisation supported by a fantastic team, including lots of volunteer support."
