Cary, NC - The Town of Cary has reopened Phase 2 of the Black Creek Greenway, marking a major milestone in the ongoing effort to enhance one of the community's most popular recreational corridors. The newly reopened segment stretches from Livingstone Drive to Weston Parkway and includes a new pedestrian bridge at Cary Parkway. This progress comes as Cary celebrates 100 miles of greenways this year, further expanding access to safe, connected outdoor spaces across the community.

Funded in part through the 2019 Shaping Cary's Tomorrow Bond Referendum and supported by Locally Administered Projects Program (LAPP) funding, the project includes a 650-foot sidewalk connection and a 285-foot pedestrian bridge where no crossing previously existed. Rising approximately 50 feet above Black Creek, the more than 400,000-pound weathered steel structure is the tallest pedestrian bridge in Cary and provides a safe, seamless connection for greenway users. Integrated lighting enhances visibility, safety, and access into the evening hours.

Inspired by the surrounding tree canopy, the bridge features large leaf-patterned panels that interact with natural light, creating a dynamic experience for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the day. A new traffic signal with pedestrian push buttons at Cary Parkway and Norwell Boulevard has also recently been completed to further enhance safety and accessibility.

With this progress, the next stage of improvements is underway. Phase 3 of the project, extending from Weston Parkway to the Old Reedy Creek Trailhead, is closing today to begin renovations. This final phase is anticipated to reopen this winter.

The Black Creek Greenway renovations are part of the Town's continued investment in safe, accessible, and high-quality outdoor spaces. Enhancements across the corridor are designed to improve the user experience, extend the life of the greenway, and support Cary's growing network of parks and trails.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to review current detours and stay informed on project updates throughout construction.
