During the latest Pirate Adventure, students stepped into the rich legacy of East Austin through a guided culinary and cultural experience that celebrated the food, music, and stories of the historic Chitlin Circuit, a network of Black entertainment venues where legends like Etta James and B.B. King once reigned. After morning appetizers, the group walked to the Metropolitan AME Church, one of Austin's oldest Black churches. The students then traversed past several of East Austin's musical markets, stopping by iconic sites like the Rhapsody Mural, a vivid tribute to East 11th Street's heyday as the "Harlem of the South." The group finished the day with brunch at the historic Hillside Farmacy, an East Austin landmark with roots as a Black-owned pharmacy.
