City's beaches and pier will reopen this afternoon

Aug. 21, 2025 - As the effects of Hurricane Erin begin to diminish, some city facilities will reopen to the public later today.

The James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe Beach will reopen to the public at 4 p.m. today. Hampton beaches - Buckroe, Grandview and Outlook - will also reopen at that time, but all water access remains restricted due to continued strong wind gusts and hazardous surf conditions. Swimming, wading, paddlecraft, and motorized vessels launching from city beaches are prohibited until sunrise Friday.

While the region avoided a direct hit from the storm, it created winds and gusts that have created potentially dangerous conditions on and near the water. Please help us keep everyone safe:

  • Enjoy the beach from the sand, but do not enter the water until restrictions are lifted.
  • Obey posted signs and instructions from staff and public safety officials.
  • Stay off jetties and rock groins; surf and rip currents remain dangerous.
  • Report hazards: downed trees or lines, flooding, or impassable roads to Hampton 3-1-1 at (757) 727-8311.
    • Non-emergency police assistance: (757) 727-6111.
    • Power outages: Dominion Energy 1-866-366-4357.
    • Water service issues: Newport News Waterworks (757) 926-1000.

We will provide updates if conditions change. Thank you for your cooperation.
