DLA Installation Management at Susquehanna emphasizes environmental stewardship with week of outreach
NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. -
Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management at Susquehanna recently concluded a week-long environmental outreach initiative, designed to promote environmental awareness and stewardship among personnel and the community.
The outreach activities fulfilled environmental training requirements and promoted environmental awareness and stewardship. Activities included daily informational emails, flower planting at the Child Development Center, a 5K obstacle course, a children's fun run obstacle course, half-priced wood sales at the recycling center, and an Adopt-A-Highway litter pick-up.

A highlight of the week was the environmental outreach 5K obstacle course held April 23, sponsored by Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management at Susquehanna's, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and DLA Installation Management at Susquehanna. Six stations along the run/walk route educated participants on energy conservation and environmental stewardship. Challenges included planting flowers in a stormwater retention basin, proper battery disposal, managing the invasive spotted lanternfly, segregating recyclable materials, responding to a hazardous material spill, and navigating a model house to save energy.

Participants earned points based on their performance at each station, with the overall winner determined by a combination of race time and environmental challenge points. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jacob Skipper, DLA Distribution Susquehanna, took first place, with Julie Nguyen, transportation assistant, DLA Distribution Susquehanna, placing second.

Younger participants enjoyed a children's environmental fun-run obstacle course at the Child Development Center. Activities included learning about recycling, squishing spotted lanternflies, and turning off lights in a model house. The children also planted flowers and pea plants. Over 54 children participated in the activities.
The recycling center held a half-price scrap wood sale, offering installation personnel the opportunity to purchase wood, including crates, plywood, pallet collars, 2x4s, and 4x4s. Proceeds from the sale benefit the MWR fund and help divert waste from landfills.
The week concluded with the bi-annual Adopt-A-Highway event, where 18 volunteers cleaned over a mile of Normandy Memorial Drive.
DLA Installation Management at Susquehanna plans to continue its environmental outreach program with an activity booth during the annual SummerFest Aug. 6.
