Topeka, Kan. - Faculty and students from the Washburn University Kinesiology Department will support individuals with disabilities as they learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle independently during iCan Bike, hosted by the Topeka-based nonprofit Capper Foundation June 8-12 at Central Park Community Center, 1534 S.W. Clay St. The group will volunteer each morning during sessions from 8:30-9:45 a.m. and 10:05-11:20 a.m.
iCan Bike, a program of the nationally recognized nonprofit organization iCan Shine, uses specialized equipment, coaching and encouragement to help participants gain the confidence to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle in five days. Nearly 70 iCan Bike camps are scheduled across the United States and Canada in summer 2026.
"The discipline of kinesiology focuses on human movement and its impact on health, society and quality of life, which directly correlates to the purpose of iCan Bike," said Dr. Clayton Whalen, assistant professor of kinesiology, Washburn University. "With more than 10 years of experience as a bike technician for the iCan Bike program, I have seen firsthand how transformative the experience can be. Participants who cannot ride a bike on Monday are often riding confidently by Friday. It's truly a life-changing experience for the individuals, their families, the volunteers and staff."
"The department is excited to once again be part of this year's program in Topeka," said Dr. Park Lockwood, professor and co-chair of the kinesiology department, Washburn University. "Volunteering gives students and faculty a powerful opportunity to turn knowledge into impact by building confidence and independence for riders while deepening our understanding of adaptive movement, compassion and community engagement."
