In wake of Biden-Harris approval of CA gas car ban, new ad looks to incoming Trump administration’s day 1 promise to end EV mandates

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In the wake of the Biden-Harris administration approving a ban on sales of new gas cars for California and nearly a dozen other states, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is looking ahead to the incoming Trump administration and its promise to end electric vehicle mandates on day one. AFPM's new ad, "Day One Priority" will air over the next month in Florida and Washington, D.C. Newspaper wraps in Palm Beach and on Capitol Hill are also highlighting the same promise from the President-elect, which newly confirmed Speaker Mike Johnson reiterated in his own January 3 acceptance speech.

Day One Priority

Chet Thompson, President and CEO of AFPM, issued the following statement on the launch of the new ad:

"President-elect Trump knows Americans oppose gas car bans and EV mandates, which is why he promised to end them on day one of his presidency. Stopping Gavin Newsom's ban on sales of new gas cars and revising EPA's national vehicle standards to safeguard consumer freedom will be key pillars of the Trump legacy. These decisive actions will preserve vehicle choice, protect American jobs and reinforce U.S. energy dominance." - Chet Thompson, AFPM President and CEO

Day One Priority is part of AFPM's eight-figure issue campaign to educate Americans about gas car bans and EV mandates and provide consumers with opportunities to push for policy change.

Policy facts:

  • California's Advanced Clean Cars II (ACCII) regulation is set to phase in over model years 2026 to 2035 across California and 11 other states. By 2035, ACCII will require 100% of new vehicle sales to be "zero emission." No gas, diesel or traditional hybrid passenger cars and trucks meet the definition of "zero emission," and only a small percentage (a maximum of 20%) of plug-in hybrid cars and trucks will be able to be sold.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) vehicle emissions standards, finalized last spring, cover model year 2027-2032 passenger vehicles. The policy establishes average tailpipe emissions standards for cars and trucks that are so low, by 2032 none of today's gas cars, trucks or traditional hybrids would be able to meet the standards on their own. Functionally, the policy will force automakers to stop manufacturing most new gas cars in a matter of years.
