Deering Votes to Lower Property Taxes for Seniors

November 4, 2025

DECATUR, IL… State Representative Regan Deering (R-Decatur) voted to increase the income limit for seniors to receive property tax relief. SB 642 raises the maximum annual income to be eligible for certain state property tax relief programs to $75,000 for taxable year 2026. The current annual income limit is $65,000 and has not increased since 2017.

"Illinois' high property taxes have created a hefty burden for all Illinoisans, especially our seniors on a fixed income," said Rep. Deering. "Families should never have to decide whether or not to stay in Illinois because of our high taxes. It is not every day that Springfield actually passes legislation to help taxpayers, so this was a welcome piece of legislation that I know will be greatly appreciated across the state."

SB 642 increases further the Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption to $77,000 for taxable year 2027 and $79,000 for taxable year 2028 and thereafter.

The bill passed the House and Senate unanimously and awaits the Governor's signature.

"Although the legislature has a long way to go to provide adequate tax relief here in Illinois, this is a small step in the right direction," concluded Deering.
