Timothy Springer, Boston Children's researcher, named 2026 Citation Laureate

BOSTON, MA [Sept. 17, 2026] - Timothy Springer, PhD, is among 22 researchers named 2026 Citation Laureates by Clarivate. Selected by experts at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) at Clarivate, these individuals are recognized for their Nobel-class, transformative scientific breakthroughs.

Springer, Senior Investigator in the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine, and in the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine, at Boston Children's Hospital, is being recognized for his pioneering research identifying key adhesion receptors in the immune system. He was the first to demonstrate that lymphocytes and leukocytes had adhesion molecules. Springer's work on these receptors has advanced to characterizing their interactions and allosteric transitions by X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, and laser tweezers force spectroscopy.

Since 2002, ISI analysts have used publication and citation data from the Web of Science Core Collection to identify researchers whose work is of Nobel class. Out of more than 67 million articles and proceedings indexed since 1970, less than 0.02% have been cited more than 2,000 times. Citation Laureates are selected from this elite group through rigorous citation analysis and expert insight. Since the program's inception, 89 Citation Laureates have gone on to receive Nobel Prizes, often years after their initial recognition by Clarivate.
