CRU co-authored Critical Minerals Processing Report with World Bank Group

Global supply chains for essential metals currently face a pivotal challenge - where should midstream processing for critical minerals happen, and under what conditions can it succeed in developing economies? A new report, co-authored by CRU Group and the World Bank Group provides policymakers with a strategic framework for finding opportunities in the midstream.

Unlocking value through smelting and refining

The report "Technical and Economic Feasibility of Smelting and Refining in Developing Countries" was developed specifically for nations participating in the World Bank's Resilient and Inclusive Supply-Chain Enhancement (RISE) Partnership. It offers a detailed analytical framework to guide midstream processing strategies across four commodities critical to the energy transition and modern economies - aluminium, copper, lithium and zinc.

Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all approach, the analysis maps fundamental economic drivers onto country-specific situations that determine success:

  • Reliable power infrastructure: Essential for energy-intensive processing
  • Secure access to raw materials: Ensuring consistent feedstock
  • Competitive cost structures: Maintaining global competitiveness
  • Strong enabling policy environments: Creating stability for long-term investment

The work demonstrates the depth of expertise CRU brings to complex, real-world challenges. Our analysis leverages connected data and intelligence across the entire mining and metals value chain - from ore production through end-use markets. This integrated perspective is essential for understanding how decisions in one part of the supply chain ripple across the entire sector.

This report equips policymakers with evidence-based insights, needed to make informed decisions regarding critical minerals processing.

We are grateful to our partners at the World Bank Group for their collaboration and trust in CRU's expertise. Special recognition goes to our Consulting team for leading this exceptional piece of work.
