WASHINGTON D.C. - In response to President Trump directing the U.S. Department of Transportation to withhold billions in congressionally allocated federal funds for the Gateway Program, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Andy Kim (D-NJ) led members of New Jersey's congressional delegation in condemning the politically motivated decision:
"Today's announcement by the U.S. Department of Transportation to halt the Hudson Tunnel Project is a direct attack on every New Jerseyan who relies on public transportation to get to work, take their kids to school, or operate their business.
"The progress we've made in securing funding for this project comes after years of listening to and working with New Jerseyans on both sides of the aisle and enacting policies that invigorate our state and regional economies and ensures New Jersey remains a place where families of all backgrounds can thrive.
"At this moment, we need to find solutions to reopen the government and address the very real crisis New Jerseyans are facing when it comes to the rising cost of healthcare. We will not and cannot do that by holding New Jersey's critical infrastructure projects hostage.
"Congress approved this money; it's being spent to strengthen our state; the Trump Administration should remove the hold on it immediately and let our neighbors get back to work building our future."
Senators Booker and Kim were joined by Rep. Frank Pallone (D, NJ-06), Rep. Robert Menendez, Jr. (D, NJ-08), Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D, NJ-11), Rep. Nellie Pou (D-NJ-09), and Rep. Donald Norcross (D, NJ-01).
