Marcus Pool, the City's oldest public aquatics facility, will turn 100 years old in August, and the City is throwing a birthday bash in celebration. Residents are invited to join in the fun on Saturday, August 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Marcus Pool (545 W. 5th St.).
The event will feature free swimming for all ages, festive music, and a family-friendly environment. Additionally, the first 100 to arrive will be treated to a free cupcake to commemorate this milestone. A display will show the evolution of the facility following its beginning in 1925, when it was built for $15,000 as Yuma Municipal Pool. Back then, the pool was cooled by 120 blocks of ice, or 12,000 pounds, that needed only 17 minutes to melt.
The pool was rebuilt in 1982 and named after Abe Marcus, Yuma's first pool manager, who taught nearly 10,000 Yumans how to swim in his 32 years with the City.
"Celebrating 100 years of Marcus Pool is a great opportunity for our community to honor Yuma's rich history in recreation - but more importantly, it's a tribute to water safety and our city's longstanding commitment to creating safe, welcoming spaces for all," said Recreation Manager A.J. Mosqueda. "Even today, our community deeply values the joy of water - enjoyed the right way, and the safe way."
