Jan. 28 Can-Am Speaker Series event explores hockey, identity, and Canadian culture

January 20, 2026

Western Washington University's Center for Canadian-American Studies will host a virtual lecture by Canadian literature scholar Jamie Dopp titled "Belief and Doubt in Roch Carrier's The Hockey Sweater" on Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 4-5 p.m. via Zoom.

Dopp, a professor of Canadian Literature at the University of Victoria and author of Hockey on the Moon: Imagination and Canada's Game (2024), will examine Roch Carrier's iconic short story The Hockey Sweater, one of Canada's most well-known literary works. While the story is often celebrated for its nostalgic portrayal of hockey and Canadian identity, Dopp will explore how a closer reading reveals a more complex and challenging perspective.

The event is presented by the Center for Canadian-American Studies and The Foundation for WWU & Alumni. Auto captions will be available, and advance notice for disability accommodations is appreciated.
