Cary, NC - Cary residents are invited to apply for the 2026 session of Cary 101, the Town's signature citizen engagement program designed to provide an inside look at how local government works. Applications are open now through March 15.

The idea for a "citizen's college" was first discussed by the Cary Town Council during a planning retreat in early 2002. Formerly known as the School of Government, the program was created to give Cary residents a better understanding of when and how the public is involved in town processes and decisions, while encouraging greater community involvement. Cary 101 has been offered annually since 2003.

Running from early April through May, Cary 101 provides participants with the opportunity to learn:

  • How municipal government functions
  • What services does the town provide
  • How residents can become involved

Through this year's nine sessions, students get a behind-the-scenes look at Cary's government structure, culture, and decision-making. The program combines discussion, presentations, and hands-on activities to build a clearer understanding of the wide range of Town planning and operations.

Each session is organized around Cary Town Council's goal areas:

  • Active, well-planned, and livable community
  • Economic vitality and development
  • Effective transportation and mobility
  • Quality recreational, leisure, and cultural opportunities
  • Reliable, sustainable infrastructure
  • Safe community
  • Good governance

Who is eligible?

Participants must be residents of Cary or Cary's extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) and be at least 16 years old.

A former Cary 101 participant shared, "Cary 101 provided a true insider perspective on all things Cary. From the budget to public works to public safety and so much more. Every question was openly answered, and we were provided with a transparent view into how things worked. Cary101 completely exceeded my expectations."

Cary 101 continues to strengthen connections between residents and their local government by fostering informed, engaged community members. For more information or to apply, visit carync.gov/cary101.
