The White House Takes the Right Step Forward Against Cybercrime, Says ITIF

WASHINGTON-In response to President Trump's Executive Order on Combating Cybercrime, Fraud, and Predatory Schemes Against American Citizens, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the leading think tank for science and technology policy, issued the following statement from Research Assistant David Kertai:

This executive order represents a meaningful commitment to protecting Americans from one of the most serious threats facing society, cybercrime. The administration is right to take decisive leadership against fraud and scams targeting Americans. As cybercriminals increasingly exploit digital systems, steal personal data, and drain hundreds of millions of dollars from American families and businesses, the administration's three-step approach provides the kind of response this threat demands, though its success will depend on execution.Equipping the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency with the authority and funding to meaningfully support state and local partners will be critical to strengthening defensive capacity at every level of government. On victim restoration, the administration should define eligibility broadly to ensure the most vulnerable are not left without recourse. Most critically, the administration should coordinate international engagement closely with allies to maximize pressure on offending nations, as unilateral consequences alone may not change the behavior of governments that have long tolerated these networks.
