Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden said today he has joined Senate colleagues in filing an amendment to the Laken Riley Act that would protect Dreamers, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients and individuals eligible for DACA.
"We know that Dreamers are determined, inspiring, hard-working young people who belong in America and deserve the protections promised them by the U.S. government," Wyden said. "There is bipartisan support for permanent pathways to citizenship for Dreamers, and to fix our broken immigration system. I will always fight for common-sense solutions like the Dream and Promise Act, and will continue to advocate for Dreamers in Oregon and across the nation."
The amendment adds the Dream and Promise Act, which would provide a path to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders, and Deferred Enforced Departure holders. Wyden has supported protections for DACA recipients in the past calling on the Senate to adopt the Dream and Promise Act to protect Dreamers' protected status during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The amendment was led by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Along with Wyden, the amendment was co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Alex Padilla, D-Calif., Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., Gary Peters, D-Mich., Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.
