City Receives $1.2 Million Grant to Strengthen Urban Tree Canopy

The City of Greensboro has been awarded $1,285,200 to care for and plant trees on public property in parts of the city facing the greatest need.

The Tree Maintenance and Planting Project includes a detailed inventory of public trees, maintenance such as pruning and the removal of hazardous trees, and the planting of new trees. Funding is provided by a USDA Forest Service Urban & Community Forestry (U&CF) Grant from the North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS), Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the USDA Forest Service. No local match is required.

The award covers the tree inventory, maintenance, planting, community outreach, and the administrative costs of carrying out the work. The project area covers 32 census tracts identified as high-need through the NCFS U&CF Financial Assistance Program Inflation Reduction Act Project Areas. Those areas were compared against the City's own comprehensive tree canopy assessment, Keeping the Green in Greensboro: A Tree Canopy Assessment & Equity Prioritization Plan, to identify and prioritize where investment would do the most good.

This project works only on trees the City owns and maintains. That includes trees in City parks, on other City-owned property, and in the public right-of-way along City-maintained streets. The project runs through June 2028. The work will help address priority tree needs and support the long-term health and resilience of Greensboro's urban forest, building on the City's 35 year recognition as a Tree City USA community.

The project supports several of the City's long-term planning efforts. The GSO2040 Comprehensive Plan establishes a vision for Greensboro to become the greenest city in NC, while the Strategic Energy Plan and Plan2Play recognize the role of trees and other natural resources in reducing heat, improving environmental health, and enhancing parks and public spaces.
