Lakewood's trash contractor, EDCO is closed on Memorial Day so trash pickup that holiday week will be delayed one day.
Monday trash service will move to Tuesday, Tuesday service to Wednesday, and so on, with Friday service moving to Saturday.
No street sweeping the week of Memorial Day (May 26-30)
With the one-day delay in trash pickup, street sweeping on the same day as trash pickup becomes very challenging with the potential for a low quality sweep.
For this reason and as a holiday week convenience for residents, the City of Lakewood is canceling street sweeping in residential areas for the week of Memorial Day (May 26-30).
Tickets will still be issued for parking in red zones, crosswalks, blocking sidewalks and other violations of the vehicle code.
Street sweepers will provide extra attention the week after Memorial Day if needed on particular blocks.
Until 2024, Lakewood was the only city EDCO serviced that had trash pickup on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. The change in 2024 was not initiated by EDCO or Lakewood, but due to the planned permanent closure of the SERRF facility (a trash-to-energy plant). As a result, EDCO would have no place to dispose of all of the trash, recycled materials and organic materials it collects on holidays because all available landfills are also closed on holidays.
Parking enforcement will continue for non-street-sweeping related violations, such as parking in red zones or blocking sidewalks.
