The Herb Innovation Center is hosting its third biannual THInC-3M research competition to highlight and celebrate the educational research of graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the Judith Herb College of Education.
THInC-3M debuted in Spring 2021 and it is in conjunction with UToledo's university-wide 3-Minute Thesis competition (3MT). The competition provides students with an opportunity to sharpen their research and communication skills by challenging them to present their scholarly work in three minutes or less.
In addition to the three-minute speaking portion of the competition, students are allowed to display one static slide with images and limited text to enhance the audience's understanding of the research.
"Participating in the THInC 3MT competition was beneficial in helping me to think deeper about the purpose of my dissertation research and why it is important to study," said Donovan Nichols, a doctoral candidate and previous participant in the competition. "As a doctoral student, writing dozens of pages isn't the hard part for me. Synthesizing dozens of pages into a few impactful words is the real challenge. The THInC 3MT competition pushed me in the right direction and stimulated me to be more thoughtful and purposeful as I conduct my research."
The competition is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m. in Gillham Hall Room 5300.
Competitors are given the choice to submit their work in one of two tracks: the early research track that mimics a proposed research project without results or conclusions identified and the late research track, which includes the results and conclusions of the research.
First- and second-place winners of both tracks will be announced at the end of the competition and monetary awards will be posted to their student accounts.
The top graduate-level winners will advance to the 3MT competition that is open to the entire graduate student body.
For more information about the competition or to register as an audience member, please visit the THInC 3M website. Due to limited seating, those outside the Judith Herb College of Education are encouraged to register for virtual attendance.
