Mozambique hosts AU CIEFFA field visit to assess #AfricaEducatesHer Campaign

A delegation from the African Union International Centre for Girls' and Women's Education in Africa (AU CIEFFA) conducted a field mission to Maputo, Mozambique, from 8 to 10 September 2026, to assess the implementation of the continental #AfricaEducatesHer Campaign launched in 2023. The mission was conducted under the World Bank-financed East and Southern Africa Girls' Empowerment and Resilience (EAGER) Project, implemented by the African Union CIEFFA, in which Mozambique participates as a Phase 1 beneficiary country.

The mission, led by Yougbare Boubakar, Programme Officer at AU CIEFFA, opened with a courtesy meeting and a presentation of national good practices under the theme "Keep Girls in School, Empower Their Futures." The session was hosted by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Action, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, alongside the partners supporting the work of these Ministries in Mozambique. During the meeting, Mozambique shared progress on implementing the #AfricaEducatesHer campaign, focusing on empowering girls and young women.

Reflecting the Campaign's regional scope and AU CIEFFA's peer-learning approach, the mission brought together experts from Tanzania, Comoros and Madagascar to exchange on reintegration mechanisms for out-of-school girls, gender-responsive planning, and strategies to prevent school-related gender-based violence.

As part of the field assessment, the delegation visited the Secondary School of Lhanguene, the National Commercial Institute of Maputo, and Mungazine Primary School in Matutuíne district to observe ongoing initiatives supporting girls' education and retention in a rural community. A technical workshop facilitated by the African Union CIEFFA further strengthened national stakeholders' understanding and knowledge on key concepts and reference frameworks for gender equality in education.

The delegation also took part in the 8th National Conference on Women and Gender, organised by the Ministry of Labor, Gender and Social Action under the theme "Uniting to Take Action: Empowering Women and Eliminating Gender-Based Violence", held under the patronage of and in the presence of H.E. Daniel Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique.

The mission concluded with the symbolic handover of donations, including school bags, to the Ministry of Education and Culture, which reaffirmed its commitment to advancing #AfricaEducatesHer and inclusive, equitable education for girls and young women.

The field mission is part of a series of AU CIEFFA missions running from July to December 2026 across Member States implementing #AfricaEducatesHer, now active in sixteen (16) countries. It supports Aspiration 6 of Agenda 2063 and EAGER's goal of strengthening regional institutional capacity to monitor gender equality in education.
