GULF BREEZE, Fla. - Gulf Islands National Seashore will reopen portions of the Florida District on Oct. 18. The Fort Pickens Area will open for day-use beginning Sunday, Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. This area remains under a boil water notice.

Due to a large amount of downed tree debris in common visitor use areas, the following areas in the Florida District of the park remain closed:

  • Naval Live Oaks Area, including park Headquarters and all trails, etc.
  • Fort Pickens Campground and Battery Worth pavilion
  • Okaloosa Area

"In comparison to prior hurricanes, the park fared relatively well during Hurricane Isaias," said Rick Clark, Gulf Islands National Seashore superintendent. "Isaias caused no substantial damage to buildings (historic and non-historic) or infrastructure [e.g. roads, trails, and utilities, etc.] in either the park's Florida or Mississippi Districts. We are working to open the remaining areas in the park as soon as possible. Visitors should continue to be cautious of sand and vegetation across roadways and trails and not enter signed closed areas."

The Mississippi District, Perdido Key Area and Fort Barrancas areas reopened on Oct. 14. The Opal Beach Complex within the Santa Rosa Area re-opened on Oct. 17 at 8 a.m.
