Public Works Reminds Families to Avoid Trick-or-Treating in Construction Zones

With Halloween approaching, the City of Peoria Department of Public Works is reminding residents to prioritize safety by avoiding active construction and work zones while trick-or-treating.

Several roadway and infrastructure improvement projects remain underway throughout the City. Construction sites are not ideal for pedestrian traffic, and areas that may appear safe can still contain trip hazards, loose gravel, or machinery that could be dangerous after dark.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable evening for all, families are encouraged to plan their trick-or-treat routes around work zones. Public Works recommends that residents:

• Avoid active construction areas, including streets, sidewalks, and intersections under construction.

• Use sidewalks and crosswalks where available and never cut through barricaded or coned-off areas.

• Wear reflective clothing or carry glow sticks and flashlights to improve visibility.

• Supervise children closely, especially near intersections, areas with reduced lighting, and while crossing the street.

• Follow posted signage and detours around work zones.

For more information about ongoing projects and street closures, contact the Department of Public Works at (309) 494-8800.
