The American Board of Internal Medicine Announces New Governance Members

Philadelphia, July 1, 2026 - The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) today announced new governance appointments on the ABIM Council, Specialty Boards, Advisory Committees and Approval Committees.

ABIM Council

Comprising the chairs of the Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees, as well as at-large members representing early career physicians, patients and the public, the Council serves as an advisory body for the ABIM Board of Directors and is responsible for the continuous improvement of ABIM program standards, policies and procedures governing the requirements for certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC).New appointments are:

• Kimberly Bird, MD, representing the Critical Care Medicine Board as newly appointed chair
• Elise Carlson, MD, representing the Rheumatology Board as newly appointed chair

• Susan Murin, MD, MSc, MBA, representing the Pulmonary Disease Board as newly appointed chair

Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees

ABIM Specialty Boards define and refine standards for certification and MOC in their respective disciplines, and are responsible for overseeing assessments and blueprints. The Advisory Committees hold a similar function and comprise representatives of American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) cosponsoring Member Boards, which together define certification and MOC for the disciplines of hospice and palliative medicine and sleep medicine, respectively. ABIM serves as the administering board for the exams in those specialties. New appointments are:
