On Thursday 2 October, Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen will visit Uusikaupunki, where Valmet Automotive has announced that it will initiate change negotiations concerning the Uusikaupunki car factory. Possible solutions that support employment and are suitable for the situation will be sought together with Valmet Automotive and regional actors.
Valmet Automotive specialising in the production of passenger cars and other industrial contract manufacturing announced on 23 September 2025 that it will initiate change negotiations. The negotiations concern the staff of Valmet Automotive working in Finland. The estimated need for adjustments is 1,075 person-years at most.
During the visit, Minister Marttinen will meet employees of the Valmet Automotive car factory and their representatives, factory leaders, and representatives of the city of Uusikaupunki, Turku employment area and Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.
Immediately after Valmet Automotive's announcement, the city of Uusikaupunki and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment started to work together to find solutions by which the impacts of the possible adjustments at the car factory could be minimised. A plan of measures will be drawn up in regional cooperation where proposals for short and medium term measures are sought, primarily to support re-employment and the creation of new jobs.
The spillover effects of the car factory on the regions of Satakunta and Southwest Finland will also be taken into account in the regional cooperation.
Those participating in these efforts include the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, the regional employment authority and business services, and other relevant regional and local actors.
