HHSC Highlights Available Resources During Older Texans Month

AUSTIN - The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is observing Older Texans Month in May by promoting resources available to help people live well as they age. Gov. Greg Abbott issued a proclamation to encourage families and communities to celebrate the contributions of older Texans.

More than 5.4 million people age 60 and older live in Texas, according to the Texas Workforce Investment Council. Among that population, more than 1.7 million remain active in the workforce.

"HHSC is honored to stand alongside older Texans, supporting their health, independence and well-being so they can continue living full, meaningful lives," HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth said. "Every Texan deserves to age with dignity, respect and compassion."

HHSC offers a range of programs and services to help older Texans maintain healthy lifestyles:

  • Texercise provides free physical activity and nutrition resources to educate, motivate and engage adults 45 and older.
  • Age Well Live Well is a statewide campaign that promotes easy pathways to resources and emphasizes how to make healthy changes using three core messages: be healthy, be connected and be informed.
  • Area Agencies on Aging help people 60 and older, their family members and caregivers access long-term services and supports.
  • The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps people buy the food they need for good health.
  • Aging and Disability Resource Centers provide referrals and access to long-term services and specialized supports.
  • Strengthen the Care You Give provides resources to take breaks as a caregiver, find peer support or connect with mental health resources.
