Grab your Boston University sweatshirts, sweatpants, hats, gloves, mugs, pens, backpacks-whatever you've got-because this Thursday, February 5, marks the inaugural Terrier Spirit Day across all three BU campuses.

Going forward, Terrier Spirit Days will fall on the first Thursday of every month, with the next Terrier Spirit Day on March 5. The monthly spirit days aim to spread school spirit and promote a sense of community-one of the values delineated in BU's Living Our Values Initiative-among all Terriers, past and present.

So how can you show your Terrier pride?

Every first Thursday, all students, faculty, staff, and alumni are encouraged to wear their BU gear or don BU colors. If you're not on campus that day, no problem-find information below on ways to show your Terrier pride remotely.

Faculty and staff can find specific guidelines about participating in Terrier Spirit Days-including how to do so if your job requires a standard uniform-here. (And don't forget, faculty and staff always get a 10 percent discount on gear at the BU Bookstore.)

"For years, students on our campus have yearned for more belonging and BU identity," says Matthew Feliciano (CAS'26), BU Student Government president. "Something as simple as a spirit day reminds us that as we all embark on unique, complex journeys, we can always find strength and support in our peers."

Here's the rundown on Terrier Spirit Days:

On the first Thursday of every month, all members of the BU community are encouraged-but not required-to wear BU gear or scarlet or red and white. Don't have a BU sweatshirt or T-shirt? Or not coming to campus that day? No worries! You can still participate in other ways, including:

  • Using a BU-themed background for your virtual meetings (download one here)
  • Having your coffee or other beverages in your favorite BU mug or thermos
  • Wearing a BU lanyard, pin, hat, or scarf
  • Making items in your environment BU-themed (think: putting up a BU Athletics poster or decorating a display board)

More information about staff and faculty participation is available on the Human Resources website.

Expect more Terrier Spirit Day collaborations to roll out in the future.

Last, if you take a picture of yourself in your Terrier gear, don't forget to tag @bostonu on social media!

"I love to wear our colors to show how proud I am to be a member of this incredible community," says BU President Melissa Gilliam. "And I'm excited for Terrier Spirit Days, because they provide our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends with a fun opportunity to celebrate who we are, here on campus, and around the globe. Go Terriers!"
