Senator Hassan Statement on President Trump's State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) released the following statement after President Trump's State of the Union address:

"Americans are tired of President Trump's empty words, broken promises, and the ways in which his reckless actions are costing them every day. Despite the President's misleading and out-of-touch claims tonight, hardworking people across our country know the reality: they are worse off than they were a year ago. And the President and his billionaire allies either don't know it, or don't care.

"When President Trump took office, he promised to bring down costs. Instead, he continues to double down on his reckless and illegal tariffs that have pushed prices even higher. President Trump promised to keep us healthy, but once in office, he took health insurance away from millions of Americans. President Trump promised to keep our country safe, but he has instead bowed to adversaries like Russia and China and pushed away allies like Canada. The President's agenda of personal revenge, chaos, and corruption is helping no one besides himself and his billionaire allies.

"Though President Trump acts as if he is unaccountable, in our democracy, there is no voice more important than that of the American people. I urge people to continue to speak out when this Administration's actions hurt our communities. It's never too late for the President to reverse course, and I remain ready to work with anyone to address the issues that keep American families up at night, including tackling sky-high costs, standing up for the rule of law, and ensuring that our country remains safe, secure, and free."
