Senator Gallego Meets with Slovakian Leaders, Expresses Concerns over Democracy and Ukraine

BRATISLAVA - Today, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Defense Minister Robert Kalinak, and State Secretary Marek Estok on April 12th to discuss key issues facing Slovakia and the broader region.

During the meeting, Senator Gallego reiterated the importance of Slovakia's continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. He acknowledged Slovakia's efforts to provide humanitarian aid but stressed the need for a united front against Russia's territorial ambitions.

"The Slovakian people know the consequences of Russian aggression all too well, having lived behind the Iron Curtain for decades. It is critical that the Slovakian government continue to be an important ally in supporting Ukraine in their existential fight against Russian aggression," said Senator Gallego.

Senator Gallego also raised concerns about threats to democracy and media freedom in Slovakia, emphasizing that freedom of assembly and a free press are essential principles of the transatlantic alliance.

"Freedom of assembly and freedom of the press are bedrock principles of the democratic world. It is crucial that Slovakia respect these rights, particularly at a time in which democratic backsliding is on the march around the world," said Senator Gallego.

The senator expressed concern about Slovakia's energy dependence on Russia and discussed potential avenues for the United States to support Slovakia in diversifying its energy sources.

Senator Gallego reaffirmed the strong relationship between the United States and Slovakia and pledged to continue working with Slovak leaders to address shared challenges and advance common interests.
