MSS Launches New Food & Resource Initiatives in August, Addressing Nashville Food Insecurity

Metro Social Services is continuing and expanding its commitment to reduce food insecurity in the Nashville Davidson County area.

Having successfully fed more than 6,000 families and residents of Nashville through its Hunger No More food initiative July1, 2025 - June 30, 2026, MSS has secured partnerships with two key community stakeholders that are equally committed to addressing the acute needs of Nashville residents - Greater St. John M.B. Church and Scarritt Bennett Center.

Also new, through thoughtful conversations and aligned goals, the collective will host events that couple much needed food with on-site case management or on-site resource information. By doing so, the agencies will simultaneously address food insecurity and issues caused by financial strain.

"This new model of food plus case management will address residents' 'right now' needs and help them long term, taking them from where they are to where they want and need to be. We're also engaging the community on a deeper level by taking programs directly to their community instead of waiting for them to come to us," said MSS Executive Director Renée Pratt. "We're better positioned to do that with our new partners. Each is respected, dedicated, and has a long track record of helping those in need. The work is plentiful. When we come together, pool our resources, and carry the load, we can expand our reach and change more lives."

"Sunday Dinner at Scarritt Bennett Center"

Beginning August 16, 2026, MSS and the SBC will host "Sunday Dinner", a hot meal dining option for those who face food insecurity. This relaxed and comfortable dining concept is built around the goal of connection, fellowship, and belonging. Like many families who celebrate Sunday family meals, those who lack access to food can now do so.
Every third Sunday, families and individuals facing food insecurity and who reserve a table, will gather in the warm and inviting SBC Susie Gray Dining Hall where welcoming staff will greet and serve them. Attendees can dine in or take the meal to go. Additionally, social workers from MSS will be on-site providing resource information for those who need assistance beyond food access. "Hope & Help: Community Connect"

Beginning in August 2026, MSS and Greater St. John M.B. Church will begin hosting "Hope & Help Community Connect", a monthly event where Nashville residents facing financial barriers can get on-site, right now assistance from MSS case managers. Attendees can sit face-to-face with social workers, express their needs, and get connected to the resources and services they need. Additionally, a limited supply of free food boxes will be available for those who lack access to food.

This complete concept brings much needed resources directly into the communities, at trusted sites. This direct "community connect" approach helps reduce barriers to accessing resources such as transportation. The event will be held every third Tuesday from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Greater St. John M.B. Church, 2200 26th Avenue N., Nashville, TN 37208
